The Duffspin Fault in Beginner Pool Draw Shots

November 2, 2026by Admin Manager

The problem: a draw shot that skids forward

The duffspin is a specific fault in beginner pool: the player tries to draw the cue ball, strikes low and slightly off-centre, and produces skid instead of backspin. The cue ball leaves the tip with little rotation, slides across the cloth, and then rolls forward after contact. It looks like a powerless draw shot, but the real issue is a contaminated strike.

On a straight-in shot from one diamond away, a duffspin often sends the cue ball into the object ball at a shallow angle and leaves it sitting near the contact point. The player reads this as “no spin” and adds more force, which worsens the off-centre contact. The takeaway is simple: fix the strike before adding power.

The cause: tip placement and cue speed fail together

Two variables create the duffspin. First, the tip lands too far left or right of the vertical centre line, so the cue ball picks up side spin and loses clean backspin. Second, the cue decelerates through the ball, which reduces the friction needed to start rotation. A low tip alone is not enough; the stroke must also accelerate through the contact point.

A practical check is the chalk-mark test: chalk the tip, strike a stationary cue ball, and inspect the mark. A mark centred below the ball’s equator is playable; a mark near the lower-left or lower-right edge is a duffspin waiting to happen. For a stroke-by-stroke walkthrough of the duffspin repair drill, see duffspin.

The solution: build a repeatable low-centre stroke

The repair drill isolates contact point and acceleration. Set the cue ball on the head spot and place a second ball one diamond away. Strike at the bottom centre of the cue ball with a short backswing, a clear pause, and a smooth forward acceleration. Do not jab; the cue should finish past the cue ball’s starting position.

  1. Chalk the tip and mark the intended contact point with a mental dot at the bottom centre.
  2. Make five strokes with no object ball, checking that the cue ball returns straight back along the cloth.
  3. Add the object ball and target a clean draw back to the head rail; reduce power if the cue ball skids.
  4. Repeat ten times, changing only speed, not tip placement.

The predictable result is a cue ball that grips the cloth and returns before the object ball reaches the pocket. If the cue ball still slides, the tip is off-centre or the cue is slowing down.

How to tell a clean draw from a duffspin

Film the shot from the side. A clean draw shot shows the cue ball reversing direction after contact; a duffspin shows a forward roll or a short, side-spun drift. The cue ball’s path after contact is the only reliable evidence. Players who judge by the sound or by how low the cue tip looked will keep misreading the fault.

Once the cue ball returns straight and predictable, add distance and speed in small steps. The duffspin disappears when the strike is centred, accelerating, and repeatable.
